What's a good starter motorcycle for a woman?

I've been thinking about starting to ride a motorcycle and I'm planning on attending a training course first, but I was wondering if anyone who has been riding for a while can recommend a good starter bike for a woman. I'm 5'4" and in decent shape.

A used bike. When new to riding, it's not a question of IF you'll tip the bike, but rather WHEN you will. Look at smaller size bikes, no larger than 500ccs. I learned on a Honda Shadow and loved that bike. I see lots of other women take to the Honda
