Are permanent air conditioner filters really any good?

I live in San Antonio, Texas, and have been using disposable air conditioner filters since I bought the house. Are the permanent air conditioner filters (i.e. the ones you can wash) any good? Do they help reduce the dust in the house more than the disposable
