What is this thing on my thermostat housing (in my engine bay)?

I have a 1975 Holden HJ Kingswood with a 6cyl 202 and am wondering what this thing coming out of my thermostat housing is? I've looked on the internet and there are no other Kingswoods with this thing. Its a big nut (nuts and screws nut) with a little

that is a coolant tempearature sensor....some thermostat housing have them in it.. some dont.. its not hooked up to anything... so you can take the thermostat housing off and replace it with whatever you want... i wouldnt go with some cheap chrome
